2002-2003 USC SWIMMING AND DIVING

USC’S MCDONALD’S SWIM STADIUM HOME The McDonald’s Swim Stadium, the site of the 1984 Olympic swimming and diving competition, the 1989 U.S. Long Course Nationals and the 1991 Olympic Festival swimming and diving competition, is comprised of a 50-meter open-air pool next to a 25yard, eight-lane diving well featuring 5-, 7 1/2- and 10-meter platforms. The home facility for both the USC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams conforms to all specifications and requirements of the International Swimming Federation (FINA). One of the unusual features of the pool is a set of movable bulkheads, one at each end of the pool. These bulkheads are riddled with tiny holes to allow the water to pass through and thus absorb some of the waves that crash into the pool ends. The bulkheads can be moved, so that the pool length can be adjusted anywhere up to 50 meters. The McDonald’s Swim Complex is located in the northwest corner of the USC campus, near the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Vermont Avenue adjacent to the Lyon University Center. One recent addition to the complex is the Kennedy Aquatics Center, which houses locker facilities and coaches’ offices for both men’s and women’s swimming and diving.

CHAMPIONS

The Peter Daland Wall of Champions, honoring the legendary USC coach’s nine NCAA Championship teams, is located on the exterior wall of the Lyon Center. The latest addition to the stadium is a state-of-the-art Colorado Timing scoreboard which is the first of its kind in the collegiate ranks at an outdoor aquatic facility. Among its features is the ability to show team names and scores, statistics, game times and ani-

mation. It has a viewing distance of more than 200 yards and a viewing angle of more than 160 degrees. The swim stadium celebrated its 10th anniversary by hosting the 1993 U.S. National Diving Championships. The stadium is also the host of the annual Janet Evans Invitational, one of the largest Grand Prix meets in the United States.

USC MEN’S HISTORY

COACH PETER DALAND One of the most respected collegiate and international swim coaches in history, Peter Daland retired from coaching in April of 1992 after 35 years at USC and more than 45 years of coaching at the club and college levels. He remains actively involved in the sport and is a past president of the WSCA (World Swim Coaches Association). During his tenure at USC, Daland led the Men of Troy to nine NCAA team championships — the second most in NCAA history — and 93 NCAA individual and relay titles. He also won 17 national AAU titles (15 men’s at USC and two women’s at the L.A. Athletic Club). USC finished first or second in the country a phenomenal 20 times in Daland’s 35 years. Daland’s teams enjoyed tremendous success at the conference level as well, winning the league title 17 of the Pac-10’s 32 years. Trojan swimmers captured 155 Pac-10 individual and relay titles under Daland. His dual meet record was unparalleled: 318-31-1 (.917) in 35 seasons. USC went undefeated in dual meets in 20 seasons and his 1977 team might have been the finest collegiate swim team ever. Among the world class swimmers he has coached are John Naber, winner of four Olympic golds and 10 NCAA titles, American record-holders Dave Wharton and Mike O’Brien; Olympic stars Roy Saari, Murray Rose, Jeff Float, Joe and Mike Bottom and Bruce and Steve Furniss. Yet just as important is the success Daland’s swimmers had out of the pool. Seven Trojan swimmers went on to win NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and three former Trojans were recipients of the NCAA’s prestigious Today’s Top Six Award (Steve Furniss, Wharton and Naber). At the international level, Daland stands as one of the world’s most successful coaches. He led two of the most powerful United States teams ever in Olympic competition — the 1972 men’s team that won nine gold medals and the 1964 women’s squad that captured six of eight golds. He also guided American teams to impressive victories in meets against East Germany and the USSR in 1971 and at the World University Games in 1973. Administratively, Daland has been the swimming chairman for the World University Games (Universiade) since 1983. He was the USA delegate to the International Swimming Federation Congress (FINA) in 1991 and 1995. Daland is currently the president of the World Swim Coaches Association. He is a past president of the American Swimming Coaches Association. Daland’s Trojan swimmers did exceptionally well on the international scene, highlighted by seven gold and two silver medals at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal — more medals than any country except the United States. Daland was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 1989-90 and was a six-time

national Coach of the Year (1971 — NCAA Coaches Assoc.; 1962 — American Swimming Coaches; 1973 — American Swimmer; 1964-66 — Columbus Touchdown Club). He was presented with the Ousely Award for Outstanding Service to ASCA in 1992. In 1975, Daland was awarded the prestigious “National AAU Swimming Award,” given to the person who has contributed the most to swimming. The College Swimming Coaches Association of America presented him with the 1976 “Collegiate and Scholastic Swimming Trophy” for his contributions to swimming as a DALAND’S competitive sport and healthy recreation USC RECORD activity. He is also involved in a number of Year Record Conf. NCAA swimming-related activities. John Naber enjoyed a spectacular career swimming both at USC and internationally, topped off by winning the 1977 Sullivan Award as the nation’s top amateur athlete. At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, he won gold medals in the 100- and 200-m backstroke, the 400 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay, setting new world records in each event. In addition, he won a silver medal in the 200 free. At USC, Naber led the Trojans to 4 NCAA team titles from 1974-77 by winning 10 individual titles and participating on 5 winning relay teams.

Cynthia Woodhead, a former USC assistant coach, was a 2-time Olympian, first at the boycotted 1990 Moscow Games and then at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, where she won a silver medal in the 200-meter free. She held the world record in the 200 free from 1978-84, and her U.S. record in that event wasn’t broken until 1992.

Dave Wharton was an amazing 21-time All-American in his four years at USC, winning 7 individual titles from 1988-91. He was a winner of the prestigious NCAA Top Six Award, as well as an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. Wharton became only the fourth swimmer to win the same event (the 400m IM) 4 consecutive years at the NCAAs, and was named the 1988 and 1989 NCAA Swimmer of the Year. He was the first swimmer to be a 4-time Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year. Wharton won the silver medal in the 400 IM at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and set world records in the 200 IM and 400 IM.

Roy Saari won 3 individual titles at each NCAA meet from 1964-66, becoming only the second athlete at the time to have won 9 NCAA titles (which ranks second on USC’s all-time list) and was part of 2 NCAA team championships. In the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, he won a gold medal as part of the 800-meter freestyle relay and a silver medal in the 400 IM. Also in 1964, he became the first person to break the 17-minute mark in the 1500m. He won 6 AAU individual titles and set U.S. records in the 400 and 1500 free at the 1965 National AAU indoor meet.

Woodhead swam at USC from 1984-87 and earned All-American honors all four years. She was voted the World American Swimmer of the Year in 1979 and was runner-up for the Sullivan Award.
