Home for the Holidays FEATURE
Congregational Care Ministries If you happened to find yourself stuck on the freeways of Southern California over Thanksgiving weekend, then you, among many others, witnessed thousands of bumper-to-bumper vehicles desperately crawling inch-by-inch towards their chosen holiday destinations. It was truly an unbelievable sight. What once was a somewhat steady flow of commuters trying to make it to work earlier in the week had virtually overnight become an immovable mass exodus of holiday proportions. Perhaps it was then, as you sat in your motionless car, that you might even have heard yourself say out loud, “Where in the world are all these people going? They must be going somewhere! But where?” Then, before you even have a second to think, the answer suddenly occurs to you; “Oh, they’re all going back home!” Home, you see, is where we always want to go for the holidays. Though it’s not true for everybody, there is no question that a large portion of the population
attempts to go back home during the winter season. It’s nice once a year to see the folks you grew up with and the relatives you love; it’s nostalgic to return to the homes we were raised in and see the places we remember from our childhoods. The holidays just seem like the right time to change the scenery and go back home. But did you know that for some people in our church, the scenery never changes? Some of our members at Grace Church never have to endure any Thanksgiving traffic or Christmas commutes; in fact, they never have to endure any travel problems at all. Why? Because they are, in a word, homebound. The reason they never go back to the homes they were raised in is because they are unable to leave the homes they presently live in. Even coming to church on a Sunday is not really an option for them. Whether because of a physical limitation brought on by illness, age, or accident, there are a number of people in our wonderful church who never go anywhere for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Though they enjoy
That’s why each Christmas season we ask our church family to bring a little bit of their home into the homes of our homebound saints! Beginning next Lord’s Day, if you and/or your family want to create a Christmas card to send to the list of homebound folks listed on this page, then we will deliver it to them as an expression of your love. Just create or buy a card and write the name of a homebound saint on the front of the envelope (leaving room for their address and a stamp that we will provide), and we will do the rest! Though these folks aren’t able to go home for the holidays, they can be warmly encouraged by the fact that you took the time to bring a little piece of your home to them.

our live-stream capabilities and worship with us from afar, they still don’t really get to enjoy the heartfelt expressions of encouragement that we so often take for granted.
